Plumbing Services in Dover, MA

Dover is a different conversation. Most homes here are on private wells, which means nobody treats or tests the water for you. We start with a test and work from there.

Where does Dover’s water come from?

Mostly from the ground under each house. The town’s water conservation page puts the share of households on private wells at about two-thirds, and about 30% on public water suppliers such as the Colonial Water Company. Dover is not an MWRA water or sewer customer, per the MWRA’s customer list.

What does a private well mean for your plumbing?

There’s no municipal treatment at all — nobody is disinfecting, adjusting pH, or testing on your behalf. Hardness is usually the least of it. Iron and manganese stain fixtures and laundry, sulfur produces a rotten-egg smell, and bacteria is a real possibility after heavy rain or spring melt.

Private-well houses generally need a treatment train rather than one appliance: a sediment stage, then whatever the test calls for, then UV disinfection last. Getting the order wrong is a common mistake — a softener installed ahead of an iron filter will foul the resin bed and fail early. See water filtration for what we install.

What about septic?

Dover’s Board of Health enforces the state’s Title 5 septic code with stricter local rules. We handle the plumbing inside the house; septic design and repair belongs to a septic contractor. If a slow drain might be the septic system rather than the pipe, tell us when you call.

Questions Dover homeowners ask

Do I need water treatment on a Dover private well?

Usually something, but the test decides what. Private wells can carry hardness, iron, manganese, sulfur and, after heavy rain or spring melt, bacteria. Many need a treatment train — sediment first, then whatever the test calls for, then UV disinfection last.
