Where does Needham’s water come from?
Needham is a partial MWRA water customer. According to the town’s water sources page, about 80 to 90% of its water comes from the Charles River Wellfield — three town-owned wells, treated at the Charles River Water Treatment Facility. A water main from the MWRA’s MetroWest Tunnel supplies the remaining 10 to 20%, during periods of high demand such as the summer months.
What does that mean for your plumbing?
Groundwater carries more dissolved minerals than reservoir water, and Needham’s mix shifts between seasons. That’s why Needham sits in the “test first” column of our town-by-town water list: a test tells you whether scale is a real problem in your house before you spend money on a softener.
Mineral content also affects water heaters. Sediment builds up faster in tanks on harder water, and tankless water heaters need periodic descaling. If your tank rumbles or pops, that’s usually sediment.
Needham is an MWRA sewer community, per the MWRA’s customer list, so drain backups come down to the house’s pipes and its lateral to the street.

Where does Needham's water come from?
Mostly from the town's Charles River Wellfield — three groundwater wells treated at the Charles River Water Treatment Facility. The town says the wellfield supplies about 80 to 90% of its water; the MWRA supplies the rest, during high demand such as the summer months.
Do I need a water softener in Needham?
Test first. Most of Needham's water is groundwater, which is typically harder than MWRA water, and the blend changes with the season. A water test tells you what you actually have before you buy equipment.
