Where does Natick’s water come from?

Natick runs its own water supply. The town’s water quality report describes twelve groundwater wells at five locations — ten in Natick and two in Dover — with treatment at facilities including the Springvale plant off Route 9. The MWRA’s customer list shows Natick as a sewer customer only: your wastewater goes to the MWRA, but your water doesn’t come from it.

What does well water mean for your plumbing?

Groundwater picks up minerals from the ground it sits in, which is why Natick sits in the “likely” column of our town-by-town water list. In practice that means:

  • Scale on faucets, showerheads and glassware
  • Sediment in tank water heaters — the rumbling and popping that shortens a tank’s life
  • Buildup in tankless units, which need periodic descaling to keep flow and efficiency up

The fix starts with a water test, not a sales pitch. If the test shows hard water, a softener sized to your household and measured hardness solves it; if it shows iron or manganese, that’s a different filter, installed in the right order.

Questions Natick homeowners ask

Do I need a water softener in Natick?

Probably. Natick is supplied by its own municipal wells rather than the MWRA, and groundwater in this area is generally hard. Test before buying — hardness varies well to well within a single town.
