What causes clogged drains?
Most clogs build up slowly. Grease and food in kitchen sinks, hair and soap in bathroom drains, mineral buildup inside older pipes, items flushed that shouldn’t be, and tree roots in the sewer line are the usual causes.
What are the signs a drain needs professional cleaning?
- Slow drains in sinks, showers or tubs
- Clogs that keep coming back after a plunger or store-bought cleaner
- Bad odors from trapped debris or grease
- Gurgling in the pipes when water drains
- Water backing up in more than one drain — often a main-line problem
How do you clear a drain?
A plumber clears the blockage mechanically rather than with harsh chemicals, then checks that the line runs freely. When a clog keeps returning or several drains are affected, a camera inspection locates the cause so it gets fixed instead of cleared again next month.
Do older homes need more drain maintenance?
Often, yes. Older drain systems — cast iron stacks, aging sewer lines — are more prone to buildup, corrosion and root intrusion. Our posts on drain cleaning in Newton and plumbing problems in older Newton homes go into more detail, and if you’re dealing with a clogged toilet right now, start with how to unclog a toilet with baking soda and vinegar.

When does a clog need more than a plunger?
When it keeps coming back, when more than one fixture backs up at once, or when drains gurgle or smell. Several drains backing up together usually points to the main line rather than a single fixture.
Do you do camera inspections?
Where it's warranted. A camera shows what's actually in the line — buildup, a break, or root intrusion — so the fix matches the problem.
What does a drain cleaning visit cost?
The service call is free. A licensed plumber comes out, diagnoses the problem and gives you a written price before any work starts. If you go ahead with the repair, there's an $89 service fee on top of that price; if you don't, you pay nothing.
