What does Newton’s water mean for your plumbing?

Newton is a full MWRA water and sewer community, according to the MWRA’s customer list. The water comes from the Quabbin and Wachusett reservoirs and is soft, so a softener won’t improve it. If you’re concerned about taste or chlorine, whole-house carbon filtration is the usual answer — see water filtration.

Newton’s wastewater goes to the MWRA sewer system, so recurring drain backups usually come down to the pipes inside the house or the sewer lateral to the street. Our post on drain cleaning in Newton covers the warning signs.

What about Newton’s old lead service lines?

Newton replaced several hundred lead water services through a city Lead Service Replacement Program. Those services dated from 1875 to 1915. The city paid to replace the portion in the public way and gave homeowners the option to replace the private side from the property line to the meter, with a ten-year, no-interest payment plan.

If your service line was replaced only on the street side, the pipe from the property line into your house may still be original. We can inspect it and, if needed, replace the private-side line as part of a repiping job.

What else do Newton homeowners call us for?

Most Newton calls are the same jobs as anywhere — leaks, water heaters, running toilets — and our post on common plumbing problems in older Newton homes walks through the ones we see most.

Questions Newton homeowners ask

Do I need a water softener in Newton?

Almost certainly not. Newton is a full MWRA water community, supplied from the Quabbin and Wachusett reservoirs, and that water is soft. Whole-house carbon filtration for taste and chlorine is the more common ask on MWRA water.

Does Newton have lead service lines?

The city ran a Lead Service Replacement Program that replaced hundreds of lead services installed between 1875 and 1915, paying for the public-side portion and offering homeowners a no-interest payment plan for their side. If you're not sure what your service line is made of, the Newton Department of Public Works can tell you what its records show.
